Starter Jars
We created Jars so customers could bucket their savings into specific use cases, or goals.
Ex. If you wanted to save $3,000 for an upcoming summer adventure in Europe, we would help you make consistent contributions to reach your goal before a target date.
This feature is well-loved by power users, but less beginner-friendly to users who are looking to explore how the feature works. Without a specific goal in mind, the activation energy required to get set up felt high.
I worked with 2 engineers to launch Starter Jars, resulting in an 80% increase in users who began saving with Jars.
The solution
We created a default Jar that all new users see after landing on the home screen.
I designed an animated tile to draw a user's attention to the component, creating visual interest on an otherwise simple screen.
We present a quick explainer that introduces the concept and Jars. Then, we create a doorway to the next intended action — adding money and transacting — by asking users to turn on roundups. If enabled, we'll round up the next purchase and deposit the difference into their new Jar so they begin accumulating a balance effortlessly.
